So to get this I queued up after work for about an hour and a half outside Waterstones in Manchester where Mr Cave was holding court with a pen and a packet of cigs. We were warned that it was a tight schedule and Nick Cave would only really be there for an hour and a half max... of course we queued anyway. I mean, come on the man is a living genius right? His music somehow destroys me and makes me laugh out loud far too often than is really normal for a singer/songwriter. Still, finally inside and weaved through the rows of books in the shop there were still half a ton of people behind us, book signed quick chat/hello/omg i held a door open for you at ATP and a friendly smile and that was that. Cut to enourmous excitment a few beers and a stolen Hoegarden glass later and I'm done. Now to read the book then.

this is his second novel, the first one I haven't read... maybe one day. Though if it is anything like this I am not 100% sure I want to read it. Not that this is a bad novel, no way. Lets put it this way if books could have a legal age rating then this one would surely be an 18. It's lewd, sickening, funny, horrific, shocking, painful, upsetting and insane all in one go. But at the same time you know exactly what will happen the second you start reading the book. The story follows Bunny Munro and his young Son on their travels into oblivion. Bunny's wife is gone, and Bunny is a sex mad raving degenerate that really is the saddest hero ever. How this story came to be I will never know, and how he manages to get away with the shocking and downright filthy Kylie Minoge/Avril Lavigne references I will never know. But it does the trick, it's written simply and its not too long (check out the larger sized font kids). Though easy going this is not, it keeps you gripped all the way through. It's certainly not the best novel ever, nor does it try to be. But for a crippling tale of a world falling apart that leaves you slightly baffled and horrifically shocked... this is brilliant stuff.
